Transformer Station – green transition (Thor Offshore Wind Farm)

THOR Offshore Wind Farm – Onshore Substation Delivery
A-LEAF has successfully supported the development and delivery of the onshore substation infrastructure for the Thor Offshore Wind Farm. This critical green transition project involves high-voltage transformer technology supporting grid stabilization and infrastructure readiness.
Project Overview
The Thor Offshore Wind Farm project is one of Denmark's largest offshore wind farms, consisting of three main parts:
- Offshore Wind Farm: Installation of 72 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD turbines with a total capacity of 1,000 MW. Expected full operation is in 2027.
- Onshore Substation: Construction of the high-voltage transformer station to receive and stabilize the power.
- Cable Infrastructure: Laying of high-voltage subsea and land cables to connect the offshore turbines to the national grid.
A-LEAF Roles & Responsibilities
A-LEAF provided a complete project organization with highly specialized consultants to manage and supervise the construction and installation phases:
- Sr. Site Manager (JRC)
Responsible for the overall site management, civil works coordination, and managing subcontractors to ensure timeline and budget compliance. - Construction Manager (LDU)
Responsible for supervising the construction phase, structural steel installation, and ensuring strict adherence to HSE and safety guidelines. Responsible for coordinating the joint delivery between the contractor and Siemens Energy, managing project scope and schedule, facilitating communication, and ensuring compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements. - Logistic (PKS)
Responsible for site logistics, material delivery coordination, and planning complex heavy lifts for the transformer equipment. - Electrical Installation & Commissioning (MBR)
Responsible for high-voltage electrical installations, transformer testing, and supporting the final commissioning phase.
Outcome and Impact
The successful integration of high-voltage transformer technology ensures grid stabilization and infrastructure readiness, enabling the Thor Offshore Wind Farm to deliver clean, renewable energy to hundreds of thousands of households. The THOR onshore transformer station is a cornerstone in Denmark's green transition, and the collaboration has resulted in a robust, future-proof infrastructure.
